Child Eye Exam

Child Eye Exam

Child eye exams are absolutely crucial! A child’s first eye examination should be at the age of 6 months, then at 3 years and yearly after that. Child eye examinations are fully covered by Alberta Health Care up to the age of 19 years. The primary goal of an eye exam at 6 months of age is to screen for any serious eye conditions such as eye turns, genetic conditions affecting the back of the eye or cancer of the eye. Those conditions that can be treated must be treated right away to avoid any progression. Once the child gets older, then the eye exam is focused more towards eye teaming abilities, eye movement abilities and their prescription, while keeping a close eye on their eye health each year.
